BMW Exhaust Camshaft Problem

BMW Exhaust Camshaft Problem

“Something didn’t seem to line up.”

That was the concern shared by Mr F, who manages a nearby used-car dealership.

A customer had returned a BMW 118i after experiencing a rough idle and repeated BMW engine warning light alerts. While he’d already completed some checks at his used-car dealership, they hadn’t explained the vehicle’s behaviour.

With the issue still unresolved, Mr F brought the vehicle to our independent BMW specialists at Ystrad Service Centre, Ystrad Mynach, for further investigation.

Although the fault wasn’t immediately visible, the symptoms indicated a deeper timing-related issue. By working through a structured assessment, we uncovered a troubling BMW exhaust camshaft problem affecting the engine’s operation.

Throughout this blog, you’ll learn about the process our experts followed, what we found, and how we restored smooth, consistent performance.

BMW Exhaust Camshaft Problem

Initial Checks Used to Assess the BMW 118i Issue

When the BMW 118i arrived at Ystrad Service Centre, Ystrad Mynach, our team approached the issue in the same way they do with all complex engine concerns: listening to Mr E’s experiences first, then confirming the symptoms through structured checks.

Mr E informed our team that the vehicle had been experiencing a BMW engine warning light, uneven idling, and intermittent drivetrain malfunction messages. As earlier checks hadn’t identified the cause, our task was to uncover the underlying cause of the behaviour.

Using this information, we carried out an initial assessment that included:

  • A visual inspection beneath the bonnet to check for disturbed parts or recent work.
  • A complete system scan using the BMW manufacturer data to review stored and active fault codes.
  • A controlled engine start to assess idle behaviour.

As the visual inspection didn’t reveal a clear cause, attention turned to reviewing the fault codes.

BMW Exhaust Camshaft Problem

The system scan returned two fault codes that were directly linked to the symptoms:

  • 130304 – VANOS exhaust cam jammed.
  • 160021 – Crankshaft sensor loss of synchronisation.

(VANOS is BMW’s variable valve timing system, which adjusts camshaft position to support correct engine operation.)

Taken together, these codes highlighted three key points:

  1. Synchronisation between the camshaft and crankshaft had been lost.
  2. The BMW 118i rough idle and engine warning light were connected symptoms; they were part of a wider engine issue.
  3. There was a fault affecting the exhaust camshaft control within the engine.

While these results confirmed the issues reported by Mr F, fault codes alone don’t explain the root cause, so further testing was required to identify the BMW exhaust camshaft problem.

Confirming the Cause Behind the BMW Exhaust Camshaft Timing Fault

With the initial checks confirming active VANOS and synchronisation faults, attention turned to examining the BMW 118i engine timing system in more detail. Problems in this area can have several underlying causes, so a structured, evidence-based approach was required.

Using BMW technical data and guided testing procedures, our team followed a clear plan:

  • Assessing engine timing electronically by comparing camshaft and crankshaft signals using an oscilloscope.
  • Removing the rocker cover and related components to allow physical inspection of the timing assembly.
  • Assessing the VANOS system to determine whether the issue lay with the valves, pulley, or camshaft.

The oscilloscope readings provided a crucial breakthrough in the investigation. They showed a pattern consistent with incorrect exhaust camshaft timing and ruled out a purely sensor-related fault. This led us to proceed to a mechanical inspection.

To confirm our team’s findings, the rocker cover and high-pressure fuel injectors were removed, allowing full access to the camshaft and timing components. This also enabled our experts to carry out accurate physical timing measurements.

Both the electronic checks and mechanical inspection revealed the same result…

The exhaust camshaft wasn’t reaching the correct position relative to the crankshaft.

Further checks then focused on the systems responsible for adjusting and monitoring the BMW’s exhaust camshaft timing.

Two linked problems were identified:

  • A fault within the exhaust camshaft timing adjustment system prevented correct positioning.
  • The exhaust camshaft position reference wasn’t being detected accurately.

Because of this, the vehicle’s engine control system couldn’t reliably match the requested camshaft position with the actual position. This led to incorrect valve timing, particularly at idle, triggering rough running, the BMW engine warning light, and drivetrain malfunction messages.

With the root cause of the BMW 118i rough idle confirmed, our attention turned to carrying out the repairs needed to restore correct engine timing and performance.

Repairing the BMW Exhaust Camshaft and Restoring Smooth Operation

Once the cause was identified, our BMW specialists explained the findings clearly to Mr F, outlining what was required to restore correct camshaft timing and stable engine operation.

By doing so, we ensured he understood what was causing the issue and what steps were needed to resolve it.

At Ystrad Service Centre, Ystrad Mynach, no repair work proceeds until everything has been discussed and agreed. This keeps you fully informed and in control throughout.

After agreeing to the recommendations, Mr F gave our BMW specialists the green light to proceed with the repair.

Our team then sourced high-quality BMW replacement parts and carried out the repair, following BMW procedures at each stage.

The repair was completed in the following steps:

1. Removing the affected timing components

The necessary upper engine components were removed in line with BMW repair guidance, allowing safe access to the exhaust camshaft timing parts.

2. Installing the replacement exhaust camshaft and timing components

The replacement camshaft and related timing components were fitted in accordance with BMW manufacturer procedures. This ensured that the correct positioning and reliable operation were restored.

3. Renewing associated timing-control components

Related timing-control parts, including elements of the VANOS system, were renewed to support reliable camshaft operation.

4. Setting and verifying engine timing

BMW timing tools were used to set and confirm correct synchronisation between the camshaft and crankshaft.

5. Reassembly

With the timing verified, the BMW 118i engine was fully reassembled according to BMW procedures.

With the engine reassembled, M F’s BMW 118i was ready for the final stage of our repair process: the confirmation checks.

How did we confirm the BMW Exhaust Camshaft Repair?

Once repairs were completed, our BMW experts conducted a series of checks to confirm that the BMW exhaust camshaft problem had been fully resolved and that engine operation had returned to normal.

This final confirmation included:

  • Verifying camshaft and crankshaft timing after reassembly.
  • Running system checks to confirm no related faults remained.
  • Observing BMW’s engine behaviour at idle and during a controlled road test.

These checks confirmed correct camshaft timing, resolved the BMW 118i rough idle, and ensured the BMW engine warning light no longer appeared.

After the confirmation tests were complete, Mr F was contacted to confirm the outcome. He was pleased with the value provided and confident that the BMW was back in good working condition.

The BMW left Ystrad Service Centre, Ystrad Mynach, running smoothly, with consistent engine performance restored and no further timing issues present.
