A Range Rover Velar was brought in for diagnosis after engine and oil system warnings appeared

 

What should have been a normal drive turned into something else entirely. Mr A was behind the wheel of his 2018 Range Rover Velar when the engine management light appeared on the dashboard, followed by a warning message relating to the engine oil system. There had been no warning signs beforehand.

Most drivers would be unsettled by oil-related warnings appearing out of the blue. The Range Rover Velar engine warning lights left Mr A worried. What was going on with the vehicle? Was it safe to continue the journey? And what might happen if the fault was left unchecked?

Building the Picture: Mr A’s Account and Our Initial Scan

Once the vehicle was with us at Ystrad Service Centre, Ystrad Mynach, our technicians sat down with Mr A to go through what had happened.   • P25A9-13: Piston cooling oil control circuit open. The engine control module (ECM) had picked up an open circuit in the electrical circuit of the piston cooling oil control valve.

To help control piston temperature during operation, the engine relies on oil jets inside the engine block that spray engine oil onto the underside of the pistons. The piston cooling oil control valve controls the flow of engine oil to these jets. If the electrical circuit between the ECM and the valve is interrupted, the ECM may not be able to actuate the valve correctly, and oil may not reach the piston cooling jets as intended.

When this occurs, the engine management light and an oil-related warning message can both appear, even if there is nothing wrong with the oil level. The warning is connected to the engine’s ability to control oil flow to the piston cooling system. It is not necessarily a sign that oil is low.

The fault code was on record and the warning pattern made sense. Our technicians at Ystrad Service Centre began a focused diagnostic process to establish the root cause of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.

Working Through the Circuit: P25A9 Range Rover Diagnostic

The fault code had given our technicians a strong starting point for the P25A9 Range Rover diagnostic. It confirmed an open circuit, but not where the fault lay within the circuit. The wiring, connector, valve, or another section of the circuit could each have been responsible. Our technicians tested each one in a structured sequence.

Step 1: Manufacturer technical data review

Before starting any physical work, our technicians consulted the manufacturer’s technical information system. This covered known issues, technical service bulletins, recalls, and field remedies linked to the P25A9 fault on the Range Rover Velar.

Step 2: Wiring harness inspection

Step 4: Oscilloscope testing

An oscilloscope was connected to test the electrical integrity of the wiring between the engine control module and the piston cooling oil control valve. This allowed our technicians to examine signal and supply performance under live conditions, rather than relying on a static resistance check alone.

  • The wiring tested within expected parameters. The circuit between the control module and the valve was intact.

Step 5: Valve activation test

With every other part of the circuit cleared, the valve was the final component to assess. Our technicians used dealer-level diagnostic software to command the valve to activate and monitor its response.

  • The valve did not respond as it should have. Testing indicated the valve had failed, confirming it as the root cause of the Range Rover P25A9 fault.

Every part of the circuit had been tested and cleared individually. The wiring and all connections were confirmed as sound, and every test pointed back to the valve.

Repairing the Piston Cooling Oil Control Valve Failure

  • The harness and connector were reconnected to the new component.
  • All stored fault codes were cleared from the engine control module.
  • Post-repair system checks confirmed the new valve was responding correctly to the engine control module.
  • A final system scan verified no remaining fault codes and confirmed the oil-related warning message had cleared.
